The sleepy town of Punggol is poised for an exciting makeover. Despite efforts by planning authorities, Punggol remain an unpopular choice among HDB buyers but all that may change within the next two to three years.
A new shopping mall as large as Junction 8, in the town centre, will be constructed. The site will be used for a mixed commercial and private residential development.
Punggol is also earmarked as Singapore’s waterfront town. Much activities will center around a new waterway. HDB has finished technical studies in their framework for a safe, eco—friendly and vibrant town. Work is expected to start next year.
HDB has also launched a design competition for innovative waterway landscape designs. A Waterfront Housing Design Competition will also be held to develop ideas on a new generation of public housing. Once construction of the waterway is completed, HDB will launch the first public housing site in that area. Some land are also set aside for private residential projects.
Mr Mah said, “HDB is going to launch and build another 4,000 new homes in Punggol later this year for sale under the BTO (Build—to—Order) program. We are going to have more than 20,000 new flats in Punggol.”
Work on the coastal promenade and a Rustic Park at Coney Island will start next year. I expect the fun and adventure along the coastline to add value to properties in the former pig-rearing neighborhood.
